Is it my imagination, or are people somehow friendlier these days?
Has this present darkness, which throws such a long and fearsome shadow, somehow worked to make us more compassionate toward one another?
Well, you be the judge.
I went into Lowe’s yesterday to pick up some cow manure (important stuff for a gardener) and everyone was extremely kind, quick to smile and anxious to say “Hello.” Yes, we were all six feet apart, but in some paradoxical way, closer than ever. What were these strangers trying to say when they smiled and waved and wished me well? When a good ole boy, who didn’t have to, loaded six bags of manure into the trunk for me?
Maybe it was this:
“Hey friend, today I see you in a different light than I ever have before. A human light. I don’t care whether you’re a blue state guy, a red state guy, or maybe purple. Whether you’re a man or a woman, rich or poor, or what color your skin is. The way I see it, we’re stuck in the same little boat, sailing through space, with no time to waste …”
